It was a dramatic night in the Champions League last night – full of
goals, comebacks and a few surprises.

There were 27 goals scored in 8 games - and 2 games had 5 or more goals. The San Siro stadium witnessed one of the shocks of the season, with
Greek side Panathinaikos winning 1-0 away at Inter Milan. That result was
12/1 before kick off yesterday.

The Panathinaikos win has put a cat amongst the pigeons in Group B – all
4 teams still have a (mathematical) chance of Qualifying for the Knockout
Stages. Inter are through, but there’s still 1st place to play for.

Last night’s results:

2 losers, 1 winning ‘saver bet’ and 1 ‘open’

At one point in the 2nd Half of last night’s games, all of our bets were
on course to win. Liverpool and Atletico Madrid were well ahead on the
corners and Anorthosis Famagusta were 2-0 up at home to Werder Bremen.

However, it’s never over ‘til the final whistle, and on this occasion
some late goals and corners cost us our bets.

In the 2nd Half of last night’s game, PSV Eindhoven won more corners (6)
than they have done in their last 4 away Champions League games added
together. Taking the total corner tally in the Atletico v PSV game to 12,
and 5-7 in favour of the Dutch side. Atletico were 2 goals ahead after half an
hour, so that had an impact of their corner count, too (they only won 1
corner in the 2nd Half).

Werder Bremen came back to draw 2-2 in Cyprus. Hugo Almeida’s 87th minute
equaliser did the damage - until then Anorthosis were on course to finish
the evening level on points at the top of Group B. Our ‘To Qualify’ bet on
Anorthosis is still open – they now need to beat Panathinaikos in Greece
on 9th December.

In the Liverpool v Marseille game, the home team won exactly 3 corners
more than their French opponents – so our ‘saver bet’ on the ‘-3 Corner
Handicap Tie’ was a winner. Leaving you level (or just over) on that
game.

Liverpool kept up their 100% ‘most corners’ record at home, but fell one
short of the tally needed to beat the handicap (Liverpool 6 corners,
Marseille 3). Liverpool scored from their first corner kick, and after
that most of the pressure came from Marseille.

with a great track record in this competition…

Top Scorer advice…

Lionel Messi (Barcelona) and Steven Gerrard (Liverpool) both hit the net
again last night – and are top of the Top Scorers chart with 5 goals each
this season.

Last season Messi and Gerrard finished joint-3rd in the Top Scorer chart,
with 6 goals each.

The Top Scorer award in 2007/8 went to Man Utd’s Cristiano Ronaldo (with
8 goals). He’s yet to score in this season’s competition – and considered
a 28/1-shot to be Top Scorer this time around.

There’s still one Group game left this season – and both Barcelona and
Liverpool are already qualified for the Knockout Stages. Meaning Messi
and Gerrard could play in anything up to 8 more Champions League games
each this season (and at least 3, barring injury). So far both players
have scored 5 goals in 5 games.

You don’t often get great prices for players that are already top of the
scorer charts – but Messi and Gerrard look good value right now…

After last night’s games, Messi is available at 9/2 (5.50) to be Top
Scorer this season, and Gerrard is 8/1 (9.00).

The good news is that some bookies (Blue Square, 888 Sport, Betfred and
Totesport) are offering ‘Each Way’ terms of ¼ odds for the top 4 places
in this market. You’d have made a profit backing both Messi and Gerrard
with those ‘Each Way’ terms last season.

Considering they’ve already got 5 goals each on the board this season,
I’d recommend you back them both, ‘Each Way,’ before the next round of
games.
