Last night Chelsea, Roma and Schalke joined Manchester United,
Arsenal, Fenerbahce and Barcelona in the quarter finals of the
Champions League. The quarter final line up will be completed next
Tuesday night when Inter Milan face Liverpool at the San Siro.
Now for a detailed look at last night’s action starting with Porto
v Schalke…
Porto 1 Schalke 0
Lopez 86
Schalke are through to the quarter finals of the Champions League
for the first time in their history after beating Porto on
penalties last night. Lisandro Lopez’s 86th minute strike for Porto
took the game into extra time. With Porto down to 10 men after the
sending off of Jorge Fucile, Schalke should have took advantage but
it was actually the home side that created the best chances in the
extra time. With neither side beaing able to make the break through
the tie went to penalties. Schalke won the shootout 4-1.

Actual result:
Just like the 1st leg between these two sides the match was settled
by just 1 goal. Porto had the majority of the possession but they
couldn’t break down a stubborn Schalke defence who knew a draw
would see them through to the quarter finals. The home team were
desperate for the break through and it final came in the 86th
minute thanks to Lisandro Lopez’s strike.

Actual result:
With these two sides corner winning ability a high corner count was
always going to be on the cards. With Porto pressing for the goal
that would draw them level in the tie they piled on the pressure
towards the Schalke goal in the process gaining 9 corners in normal
time. The visitors also managed a respectable corner total of
6. This took the match comfortably Over the 10 corners margin.
The Stats said:
- Schalke to be the Team Awarded the Most Bookings Points
Actual result:
- Porto 25 Bookings Points, Schalke 30 Bookings Points
This game was going according to the form book after 65 minutes,
Schalke had received 3 yellow cards (30 Bookings Points) compared
to Porto’s none. But in the 82nd minute English referee Howard Webb
sent off Porto’s Jorge Fucile meaning the final Bookings Total was
a lot closer. Porto finished with 25 Booking Points, Schalke 30.
Real Madrid 1 Roma 2
Raul 75 Taddei 73
Vucinic 90
Roma knocked Spanish giants Real Madrid out of this year’s
competition with a 2-1 away victory in last night’s 2nd leg. With
Roma knowing a draw would see them through they allowed Real to see
a lot of the ball, but Madrid were unable to make the break
through. And when Roma took the lead in the 73rd minute Real had a
massive mountain to climb. But they struck back almost straight
away thanks to Raul’s cool finish in the 75th minute. With Real
going forward looking for the goal that would send the game into
extra time, Roma looked dangerous on the counter attack. Roma put
the tie beyond any doubt in injury time thanks to substitute Mirko
Vucinic’s brave header.
The Stats said:
Actual result:
This game looked like it was heading ‘Under 2.5 Goals’ especially
after the goalless first half. But the 3 goals in the second half
meant the game finished ‘Over 2.5 Goals’ thanks to Roma’s late
winner.
The Stats said:
- Real Madrid -1 on the Corner Handicap
Actual result:
- Real Madrid 10 Roma 4 Corners
With Roma sitting back soaking up the Real Madrid pressure, a high
corner total for Madrid looked likely. With Real Madird chasing the
game they’re racked up 10 corners compared to Roma’s 4.
Chelsea 3 Olympiacos 0
Ballack 5
Lampard 25
Kalou 48
Chelsea cruised into the quarter finals with a very comfortable 3-0
victory at home against Olympiacos. They made an early break
through thanks to Michael Ballack’s 5th minute header. Frank
Lampard doubled Chelsea’s lead on the 25th minute. The game was
over when Salomon Kalou added a third 3 minutes into the second
half.
The Stats said:
- Chelsea -2.5 on the Corners Handicap
Actual result:
- Chelsea 4 Olympiacos 4 Corners
With Chelsea taking such a commanding early lead they did really
need to pressure the Olympiacos goal as much as if the game had
remained level for a longer period of time. That was reflected in
the corner count with Chelsea only winning 4 corners in the match.
The same amount as Olympiacos.
The Stats said:
- Olympiacos to win the Bookings Points Match bet
Actual result:
- Chelsea 30 Bookings Points Olympiacos 10 Bookings Points
Chelsea had only received 1 yellow card at home in this year’s
competition. That was still the case into the 70th minute of last
night’s match. But 3 yellow cards in the final 20 minutes meant
Chelsea finished with 30 Bookings Points compared to Olympiacos 10.

That’s all for today, but we’ll be back next Tuesday with a preview
of the final 2nd leg match to be played between Inter Milan and
Liverpool.
